Viridian Gym · Gym 8
How to beat Giovanni in Pokemon Yellow
The final badge is a five-mon Ground-heavy wall: Dugtrio 50, Persian 53, Nidoqueen 53, Nidoking 55, and Rhydon 55. Ride the arrow tiles to the back, lead with Surf / Ice / Grass, keep a plan for Persian (not Ground), and treat Fissure and Horn Drill as low-odds but real OHKO threats.
Fast Answer
Surf the Ground core; delete Persian
Train into the low-to-mid 50s, lead Blastoise / Lapras / Vaporeon (or Exeggutor for Grass), and Surf through Dugtrio and the Nidos. Switch or hard-hit Persian with neutral STAB—it breaks mono-Ground plans. Finish Rhydon with Water or Ice; do not soft-stall into Fissure or Horn Drill ranges.
Viridian Gym fight
Giovanni’s Yellow team (final)
This is Giovanni fight #3 (Viridian Gym)—not Rocket Hideout or Silph Co. Levels peak at 55 with full coverage.

Counters
Water / Ice / Grass + a Persian answer
Blastoise / Surf anchors
- Surf is super effective into four of five mon (everything but Persian).
- Bulk absorbs Earthquake and Rock Slide better than glass cannons.
- Squirtle gift path: starter gifts.
Lapras (Water + Ice)
- Ice coverage wrecks Nidos and Rhydon while Surf handles Dugtrio.
- Huge HP cushions Thunder and Earthquake chip.
- Also a core Elite Four mon—see E4 guide.
Exeggutor / Grass
- Grass pressure into Ground-types; Psychic helps gym side fights.
- Hypnosis can freeze Persian or a bad Thunder matchup.
- Leaf Stone Exeggcute from Safari / elsewhere—slot in Team Planner.
Persian problem
- Mono-Ground teams fail here—bring Fighting, strong Normal, or any hard neutral special.
- Do not let Double Team stack; press damage every turn.
- Slash crits hurt; keep a healthy switch-in.
- Arrow tiles carry you until a wall or open floor stops the slide.
- Use the open lanes to work toward Giovanni at the back of the gym.
- This is the largest Kanto gym roster—optional Cooltrainers, Blackbelts, and Tamers are excellent XP for Victory Road.
- If you loop, open the site map overlay and plan stops on non-arrow tiles.
Side trainers start at Cooltrainer♂ 1 (Sandslash / Dugtrio) through Nidoking Cooltrainers—good warm-ups for the leader’s Ground core.
Suggested order
Eighth badge & League unlock
- Collect the other seven badges (Sabrina / Koga order flexible; Blaine needs Secret Key).

- Train Water / Ice / Grass into ~50–56; heal and stock Full Restores if available.
- Navigate arrow tiles; optional trainers for levels before Victory Road.
- Defeat Giovanni; claim Earth Badge + TM27 Fissure.
- Route to Victory Road → Indigo Plateau. Use the Elite Four guide next.

Tips
Viridian gotchas
Wrong Giovanni guide
Hideout (Lv.20s) and Silph (Lv.30s–40s) parties are different. This page is Viridian only—Dugtrio through Rhydon at 50–55.
Fissure & Horn Drill
Low accuracy, high panic. Faster Pokémon can deny Fissure in Gen 1; still prefer clean KOs over stalling.
Thunder on Water
Both Nidos carry Thunder. Lapras bulk or a Grass pivot reduces pure-Water wipes.
Nuzlocke & League
Level caps near 55 are common here—see Nuzlocke, then stack for Elite Four.
