Viridian → Pewter · First maze
Pokemon Yellow Viridian Forest
Cross south-to-north for Caterpie, Metapod, and Pidgey—Yellow has no Weedle and no wild Pikachu here. Grab early balls, clear Bug Catchers, then prep a non-Electric Brock answer.
Fast answer
South → loot → north → Brock prep
Finish Oak’s Parcel, enter the forest from Viridian, pick up balls and potions, optionally train on Caterpie/Pidgey, exit north to Pewter. Do not hunt Weedle or wild Pikachu here—Yellow does not put them in this grass.
Yellow-specific
No Weedle · no forest Pikachu
Red/Blue-style guides often list Weedle and sometimes wild Pikachu in Viridian Forest. In Pokémon Yellow the wild table is Caterpie, Metapod, Pidgey, rare Pidgeotto. Your only Pikachu is the starter from Oak.
Brock warning
Electric does nothing to Onix
Training Pikachu alone in the forest will not prepare you for Brock. Catch Mankey or Nidoran♂ on Route 22/Route 2, or evolve Caterpie → Butterfree for Confusion. See the Brock guide before Pewter Gym.

Forest crossing tracker
Mark each stage done. Map pins match the Yellow forest layout.
Butterfree plan
Caterpie → Metapod → Butterfree gives Confusion for Brock if you invest levels before Pewter.
Pidgey for Fly later
Early Flying mon for HM02 later—not required now, but a solid story catch.
Poison signs
Forest signs remind you about Antidotes. Keep one for Weedle-free but still occasionally poison-adjacent routes ahead.
Optional Route 22
Before or after the forest, Route 22 Mankey/Nidoran and the optional Rival fight set Eevee path flags—see Rival Eevee guide.

Tips
Clear faster
Buy balls in Viridian
After Parcel, stock Poké Balls before the grass. Forest balls alone are not enough for a full early team.
Skip trainers if stuck
All forest trainers are optional. Walk around their sightlines if you only want the north exit.
Metapod is slow XP
Harden stalls waste turns. Switch or use stronger moves rather than chip forever.
Compare versions
If a Red/Blue video shows Weedle swarms, ignore it for Yellow—see the version differences guide.
