Yellow story mechanic

Rival Eevee evolution in Pokemon Yellow

You always get Pikachu; the Rival steals the lab Eevee. Two early results—the Oak’s Lab fight and the optional Route 22 fight—set wRivalStarter to Jolteon, Flareon, or Vaporeon for Silph, the late Route 22 rematch, and the Champion battle.

Lab loss → Vaporeon Lab win → Flareon base Lab win + R22 win → Jolteon Eevee until Silph

Fast Answer

Two fights, three futures

Lose lab → Vaporeon forever. Win lab → Flareon path. While still on Flareon, win the optional early Route 22 fight → Jolteon. Skip or lose that Route 22 battle and the Rival stays Flareon. Source comment in Oak’s Lab matches this table exactly.

Tips

Play notes

Throwing the lab

Some players lose on purpose for Vaporeon. That is a real, permanent branch—not a soft reset later.

Skipping Route 22

If you won the lab and never talk to early Rival on Route 22, you keep Flareon. Jolteon requires that win.

Nuzlocke

Path choice changes Silph and Champion coverage—log the branch in your run notes. See the Nuzlocke guide.
