Pokemon Yellow tips for first time players

Yellow is not “Red with a hat swap.” You always start with partner Pikachu, Brock is a real wall, the three Kanto starters are gifts, and several story keys gate the mid-game. Use this starting-out checklist, Yellow-only rules, and deep links into the map, walkthrough, gym, and team tools.

Fast Answer

Start here, not with Thunder Shock

Deliver Oak’s Parcel, catch a Brock answer on Route 22 or in Viridian Forest, then beat Pewter without Electric moves. After Mt. Moon, sweep Nugget Bridge → Charmander → Bill’s S.S. Ticket → Anne → Surge, and keep party/PC space for gift mon. Full story tracking lives on the walkthrough page; this tool is the Yellow-specific “don’t get stuck” layer.

Pikachu

Pikachu onlyGifts later

Oak always gives partner Pikachu. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle arrive as NPC gifts on a timer. Plan storage space before each gift.

Brock

Brock walls Electric

Geodude 10Onix 12

Both mons are Rock/Ground. Thunder Shock hits for zero. Bring Low Kick, Double Kick, Confusion, or another non-Electric plan before Pewter.

Partner Pikachu will not evolve with a stone

A Thunder Stone is refused on the following Pikachu. Keep him for happiness, story, and later Thunderbolt—or read the evolution page for edge cases. Surfing Pikachu is a separate Beach House / Stadium lore path.

Rival runs Eevee, not your starter mirror

Blue’s Eevee becomes Jolteon, Flareon, or Vaporeon based on early fight outcomes. Track it on the Rival guide and walkthrough rival filter so later teams match what you will face.

Mankey

Early team

A simple first-run six (no trades)

Comfort core

Pikachu · Nidoran♂/Nidoking · Butterfree or Mankey · gift Charmander · (later) Vaporeon or Lapras · Flyer. This covers Brock, Misty, Surge, and early Rock Tunnel without trading for Alakazam or Gengar.

  • Pikachu: keep for story + happiness; learn Thunderbolt when available
  • Nidoran♂: Double Kick early, Moon Stone into Nidoking
  • Charmander gift: Fire answer before Cinnabar stones
  • Leave slots open for Squirtle / Bulbasaur / Lapras gifts

What not to stress yet

Trade evolutions, full Pokédex, and Mew glitches can wait. First runs should prioritize story keys, HM carriers, and gym type coverage. Use Catch Planner when you want a specific wild mon without over-grinding.

Avoid

Common first-run mistakes

Spamming Thunder Shock on Brock

Ground immunity makes the fight look impossible. Switch mon or moves before you waste hours.

Full party when a gift spawns

Gifts need a free party slot or open PC box. Deposit something before talking to Damian, Melanie, or Jenny.

Leaving the Anne early

After HM01 Cut from the captain, the ship sails. Collect rooms and the rival fight first.

Ignoring happiness for Bulbasaur

Melanie checks partner Pikachu happiness (≥147). Walk, battle, and avoid constant fainting if you want the gift.

No non-Normal answer for Tower

Later Ghost/Poison encounters ignore both Normal and Fighting attacks. After obtaining the Silph Scope, plan Psychic, Ground, or other non-Normal/non-Fighting damage for the Tower.

Skipping the walkthrough sync

Badge, key item, and rival branch tracking on Walkthrough / My Run / Save Import stops “am I softlocked?” guessing.

FAQ

First playthrough questions

Best tips for a first Pokemon Yellow run?

Catch a Brock counter early, never rely on Electric vs Ground, keep space for gift starters, finish the Anne before it leaves, and follow the walkthrough for story order and rival paths.

Why is Brock so hard in Yellow?

Pikachu-only start plus Rock/Ground gym. Use Mankey, Nidoran♂, or Butterfree instead of Thunder Shock.

Should I keep Pikachu?

Yes for happiness, story, and later Electric damage. Benched only if you need the party slot mid-gift—deposit, don’t release.

When do I get the other starters?

Charmander after Nugget Bridge (Route 24), Bulbasaur with high Pikachu happiness in Cerulean, Squirtle from Officer Jenny after the Thunder Badge.

Is MissingNo. or Mew required?

No for a first story clear. Optional glitch pages exist later; finish the League with normal tools first.
