The Colossal Hole Walkthrough and Checklist

The Colossal Hole Walkthrough and Checklist

The Colossal Hole (E4) is the deep eastern cavern that opens after the volcano set erupts a path from The Frigid Sea. Use the finder below for every Gray, Red, Green, and Blue chest, the permanent High Jump Boots, the Left Glass Eye Tower of Revival pair, all eight Musical Coins, and exact room-map links for Day/Night and each map variant.

High Jump Boots

FIRST CLEAR PRIORITY

Open the Green Chest for the High Jump Boots

Carry the Green Key to the Green Chest in room 13 and take the High Jump Boots. They permanently raise Wario’s jump height and open S5 Cave of Flames V2, S1 The Grasslands V4, and E1 The Stagnant Swamp V3. On the same visit, grab the Gray Chest Left Glass Eye to pair later with West Crater’s Right Glass Eye for Tower of Revival V2. Return for Air Pump, Locomotive, and Musical Coins as Garlic, Sun Medallion, or Explosive Plunger Box unlock harder variants.

High Jump is permanent ability power-up level 7. After the Green Chest, Wario’s jump height increases, which opens ledges that were previously out of reach in many levels. Use it whenever a high platform or ceiling gap seals a treasure route.

How to open The Colossal Hole

Volcano set erupts the Frigid Sea path

Collect the Blue Tusk (W2 Volcano’s Base Blue Chest), Red Tusk (S4 Steep Canyon Red Chest), and Green Flower (E1 Stagnant Swamp Red Chest). Completing that volcano set triggers the eruption: it opens W6 The West Crater and creates a route from E2 The Frigid Sea into E4 The Colossal Hole.

Once E4 is available, prioritize High Jump Boots, then Left Glass Eye for the Tower of Revival pair. Later, the Torch from Castle of Illusions burns eastern vines from the Colossal Hole path into Forest of Fear.

MAP VARIANTS · DAY & NIGHT

When The Colossal Hole layout changes

E4 has four progression variants on both Day and Night. Variant 1 is available as soon as the volcano path opens. Later variants open after you collect specific treasures elsewhere:

Variant Requirements Notes Map
V1 None (volcano path already open) Default visit. Grab High Jump Boots, Left Glass Eye, Air Pump, and Locomotive routes here. Open Day map
V2 Garlic (S3 Tower of Revival Red Chest) Powered dash opens more revisit routes inside E4. Open Day map
V3 Sun Medallion Top + Bottom (N6 + W1) Late-east layout after both medallion halves are collected. Open Day map
V4 Explosive Plunger Box (W5 Beneath the Waves Gray Chest) Late-game layout for remaining E4 routes and Musical Coins. Open Day map
Air Pump tip: The Red Chest Air Pump opens Bank of the Wild River V4 and The Pool of Rain V4. Grab it when the Red Key route is free so those water levels unlock their late treasure paths.

What to do in The Colossal Hole when it first opens

1

Green Key → High Jump

Hunt the Green Key in room 13, open the Green Chest for High Jump Boots, leave the level, and confirm the higher jump. Then push Cave of Flames V2 or other high-ledge routes if you need them.

2

Gray Eye + easy chests

Grab Left Glass Eye for the Tower pair, plus Air Pump and Locomotive when open. Mark Musical Coins along the main cavern path. Skip sealed shafts until Garlic or later variants arrive.

3

Pair eyes · revisit later

Collect Right Glass Eye in West Crater to unlock Tower of Revival V2. Return to E4 on V2–V4 for remaining coins and any sealed chest routes.
