EXP & Level Calculator for Pokémon Gold & Silver
Look up every Gen 2 growth curve, total experience by level, and how many battles you need to hit Whitney, the Elite Four, or Red. Covers all 251 species on original Gold/Silver (GBC)—not HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Gen 2 rule of thumb
How EXP is calculated
Total EXP to reach level n depends only on the species’ growth rate. Battle yield starts from the foe’s base EXP and level:
floor(base_exp × foe_level ÷ 7)
For multiple battle participants, the cartridge first floors base_exp ÷ participants, then multiplies by level and divides by 7. Trainer, Lucky Egg, and traded-OT ×1.5 boosts follow, with each boost floored separately. Exp. Share creates two half-base-data pools; the Participants field models recipients sharing one pool.
- Medium Slow starters need less early EXP than Medium Fast, then catch up mid-game.
- Slow legendaries and pseudo-legendaries (Larvitar, Dratini) grind harder to 100.
- Use Red Scale → Exp. Share for passive leveling.
- Pair with the damage calculator so gym targets die cleanly at your planned level.
- Badge obedience caps matter—see the gym level checklist.

Growth rates
Four curves used on cart
Clefairy line, Chansey/Blissey, Togepi—quick to level for their bulk roles.
Default curve for many wild mons (Pikachu, Geodude, Mareep).
All three starters and many mid-game staples. Easier early, heavier late.
Legendaries, Dragonite line, Larvitar, Magikarp—plan extra grinding.
Slightly Fast and Slightly Slow exist in the Gen 2 growth table but no species uses them.
Grinding tips
Efficient leveling on original G/S
Exp. Share from Red Scale
Catch the Lake of Rage Red Gyarados, show the Red Scale to Mr. Pokémon, and equip Exp. Share so a bench mon gains half the yield while your fighter keeps half.
Trainer multipliers
Rematches and gym trainers pay ×1.5 over wilds of the same level. Pokégear phone rematches in the Mechanics Lab are reliable mid-game EXP.
Lucky Egg
Wild Chansey (and some gifts/trades depending on version path) can hold Lucky Egg—another ×1.5 on the holder. Stack with trainer battles when you can.
Obedience & traded mons
Traded Pokémon gain ×1.5 EXP but disobey above badge caps. Match your grind plan to the badge level checklist.
FAQ
Common EXP questions
Is this the HeartGold / SoulSilver formula?
No. Curves and base EXP match original Gold/Silver. HGSS share similar growth math in broad strokes, but this page is labeled for GBC Gold/Silver only.
Why does Medium Slow go negative at level 1?
The unpatched cartridge does not treat this case as 0: the Medium Slow formula evaluates to −54 and wraps in its 24-bit value to 16,777,162 EXP. This calculator deliberately shows 0 at Lv.1 as a practical safety clamp; that clamp is tool behavior, not cartridge behavior.
Does the tool include Exp. All like Yellow?
Gen 2 uses the Exp. Share held item, not Gen 1’s Exp. All. Model one receiver here, or set Participants to approximate a split.
Where should I grind before Whitney?
Goldenrod routes, trainers on the way from Azalea, and a clean team build matter as much as raw level. See Whitney counters and set To level ≈ 18–22 in the calculator.
How do I check my current stats while grinding?
Use the DV/stat calculator and damage calculator so levels convert into real KO thresholds.
