How wild holds work
Gen 2 species list a common and rare held item in base data. Ordinary wild encounters produce the common slot about 23% of the time and the rare slot about 2%; identical slots still total only 25%, not 100%. Vermilion Snorlax → Leftovers is guaranteed for a different reason: its static battle uses the cartridge’s force-item battle type.
Mystery Gift and link-trade can still move items that have no overworld source. This page marks those catalog entries clearly so you do not hunt empty map tiles.

Tips for team building
Leftovers first in Kanto
After the S.S. Aqua, grab Celadon Café Leftovers even if you already looted Snorlax’s copy. Two sets make mid-game and Mt. Silver prep easier.
Type boosters are free power
Most boosters are one-time Johto gifts with no shop restock. Route them into your Team Planner STAB attackers before the Elite Four.
Evolution holds double as battle items
King’s Rock, Metal Coat, and Dragon Scale also work as holdables. See the trade evolution guide before you spend them on a trade evolve.
FAQ
Common held-item questions
Where is Leftovers in Pokemon Gold and Silver?
Celadon Café in Kanto gifts one Leftovers. The Vermilion Snorlax encounter also carries a guaranteed Leftovers because its battle script forces base item 1; matching base-stat slots alone would not guarantee an ordinary wild hold. See the Snorlax guide.
Where is Charcoal?
Clear the Ilex Forest Farfetch’d event, then talk to the Charcoal Kiln family in Azalea Town for a free Charcoal. Azalea Mart also sells Charcoal for ₽9800 whenever the shop is open.
How do I get Exp.Share?
Catch the Red Gyarados for the Red Scale, then trade it to Mr. Pokémon on Route 30. Alternatively, match the last three or four digits of the weekly Lucky Number Show for the second-place Exp.Share at Radio Tower 1F.
Where are Metal Coat, King’s Rock, and Dragon Scale?
King’s Rock: Slowpoke Well B2F gift. Metal Coat: first Fast Ship trip, reunite the captain with his granddaughter. Dragon Scale: item ball in Mt. Mortar 2F Inside. Related wild species can also hold copies at the rare rate.
Is Scope Lens available without Mystery Gift?
On original Gold and Silver, Scope Lens appears in the Game Boy Color Mystery Gift pool rather than as a normal overworld pickup. There is no Johto or Kanto item ball for it.
Why are Twistedspoon and Brightpowder empty?
They exist in the item index, but original Gold and Silver have no map, shop, gift, or wild hold for them. Use Pink Bow for Normal boosts; do not expect a free Twistedspoon tile on cart.
Is this for HeartGold / SoulSilver?
No. Locations and hold tables match original Game Boy Color Gold and Silver only. Remakes change item placement and several wild holds.
