Fast answer

What “TM list” means in Gold & Silver

TMs are single-use in Gen 2. Once you teach DynamicPunch, Shadow Ball, or Earthquake, that disk is gone—unlike reusable HMs. Most story TMs come from Gym Leaders and route NPCs; the deepest special moves sit in Game Corners (Coin Case) and late caves. Use the filters below for “where is TM##,” then open the map pin or compatibility tool before you spend a disk. Gold and Silver share the same TM set and normal acquisition paths.

Money & coins

Dept. Store, Game Corners, and Celadon stock

Goldenrod Dept. Store

Story-gated inventories sell combat staples such as Headbutt, Rock Smash, and the elemental punches. Stock expands as you progress Johto—recheck after major gyms if a TM is missing from the counter.

Goldenrod Game Corner prizes

Bring a Coin Case and redeem coins for heavy hitters such as Blizzard, Thunder, and Fire Blast. Coins are not yen—plan a short grinding session if you want all three before Kanto.

Celadon Game Corner & Dept. Store

Post-E4 Kanto restocks the classic specials: Hyper Beam, Psychic, Double Team, plus Celadon mart weather and utility TMs. Reach Kanto via the S.S. Aqua after the Elite Four.

TM09 Psych Up — unused

The ROM defines TM09 Psych Up, but original Gold and Silver never place a normal acquisition. The live TM/HM tool marks it unobtainable so it is not confused with a missing map pin.

  • Move still exists for glitches / external methods
  • Learners list remains valid on Psych Up
  • Scope: original GBC, not remake TM renumbering

Common questions

TM list FAQ

How many TMs are in Pokemon Gold and Silver?

There are 50 TMs and 7 HMs. Forty-nine TMs have normal in-game sources; TM09 Psych Up is defined but not sold or placed.

Are TMs reusable in Gold / Silver?

No. Gen 2 TMs are single-use. HMs are reusable and gated by badges outdoors. Plan high-power disks on your long-term party in the Team Planner.

Where is TM30 Shadow Ball?

Morty awards Shadow Ball at Ecruteak Gym after you earn the Fog Badge. Confirm learners on Shadow Ball.

Where is TM01 DynamicPunch?

Chuck’s gym gift in Cianwood City after the Surf path and Storm Badge fight.

Is this the same TM list as Crystal or HGSS?

Crystal is very close for machines but differs in story items and some availability framing. HeartGold/SoulSilver renumber and rework the TM bag entirely. This page is original GBC Gold & Silver only—see Gold vs Silver vs Crystal.

Where do I see which Pokémon can learn a TM?

Open the machine in the TM / HM archive or the individual move page. Learner counts on each card here match that dataset.
