Kanto gym leaders guide for Pokemon Gold & Silver
After the Johto League, the real second half begins: sail the S.S. Aqua, collect eight Kanto badges, beat Blue, then unlock Mt. Silver. This page is the strategy hub for original Gold/Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver)—recommended route, unlock gates, full leader parties with levels and moves, counters, and a local checklist. Parties match the live Gym tool on this site.

Fast Answer
Flexible order · Blue via Cinnabar · 16 badges
Kanto is not linear like Johto. From Vermilion, a low-backtracking loop is Surge → Sabrina → Erika → Janine → Misty → Brock → Blaine → Blue. Escort Misty from Route 25; Blaine is immediately battleable once you reach Seafoam; and talking to Blue on Cinnabar immediately sends him to Viridian Gym, regardless of your Kanto badge count. Blue is placed late here only because his team is Lv.54–58. Oak opens Mt. Silver after all 16 badges.
Badge mechanics: Kanto badges do not raise Attack, Defense, Speed, or Special stats. They only contribute the matching-type damage boosts; the separate badge stat-boost routine uses Johto badges.
After the Elite Four
Recommended Kanto badge route
- Win the Johto League (Elite Four & Lance), then return to New Bark for the S.S. Ticket.
- Board the S.S. Aqua in Olivine and dock in Vermilion.
- Lt. Surge (Thunder Badge) → Sabrina (Marsh Badge; optional Copycat Magnet Train Pass) → Erika (Rainbow Badge) → Janine (Soul Badge).
- If blocked east, clear the Power Plant Machine Part chain and wake Snorlax with the EXPN radio station.
- Meet Misty on Route 25, escort her home, then take the Cascade Badge. Cross Mt. Moon to Brock.
- Battle Blaine in Seafoam Islands for the Volcano Badge whenever you can reach him; his script has no Cinnabar prerequisite.
- Talk to Blue on ruined Cinnabar Island to send him to Viridian Gym, then challenge him for the Earth Badge whenever your team is ready.
- Talk to Professor Oak, climb Mt. Silver, and fight Red.

| # | Leader | Gym | Badge | Levels | Theme | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lt. Surge | Vermilion | Thunder Badge | 40–46 | Electric | Post-E4 · S.S. Aqua |
| 2 | Sabrina | Saffron | Marsh Badge | 46–48 | Psychic | Optional Magnet Train |
| 3 | Erika | Celadon | Rainbow Badge | 41–46 | Grass | Cut useful |
| 4 | Janine | Fuchsia | Soul Badge | 33–39 | Poison | Decoy gym trainers |
| 5 | Misty | Cerulean | Cascade Badge | 42–47 | Water | Cerulean Cape escort |
| 6 | Brock | Pewter | Boulder Badge | 41–44 | Rock | Mt. Moon path |
| 7 | Blaine | Seafoam | Volcano Badge | 45–50 | Fire | Seafoam Islands |
| 8 | Blue | Viridian | Earth Badge | 54–58 | Mixed | Talk to Blue on Cinnabar |
You can shuffle the gyms. Misty needs her Route 25 conversation, Blue needs his Cinnabar conversation, and Power Plant/Snorlax events can affect travel. Blaine has no Cinnabar flag check; reaching Seafoam is enough. The site Gym route strip uses the same low-backtracking idea.

FAQ
Common Kanto stuck points
Where do I go after beating Lance?
Hall of Fame → New Bark for the S.S. Ticket → Olivine S.S. Aqua → Vermilion. Full write-up: S.S. Aqua after Elite Four.
Can I do Kanto gyms in any order?
Mostly yes. Misty needs the Route 25 conversation. Blue needs only his Cinnabar conversation, which opens Viridian Gym without checking other Kanto badges. Blaine has no Cinnabar prerequisite and already waits in Seafoam; Power Plant / Snorlax events can still affect travel routes.
Why isn’t Misty in the gym?
She is at Cerulean Cape (Route 25). Speak to her, return to Cerulean Gym, then battle for the Cascade Badge.
Where is the Cinnabar Gym?
Destroyed. Blaine is in the Seafoam Islands gym for the Volcano Badge.
Do Gold and Silver use different Kanto gym teams?
No. Leader parties and moves are shared. Sprites differ by version; this page flips fronts with your site version preference.
How do I unlock Mt. Silver?
Collect all 16 badges including Blue’s Earth Badge, then talk to Professor Oak. Guide: Mt. Silver and Red.
Is this HeartGold / SoulSilver?
No—original Game Boy Color Gold and Silver only. Remake levels, gym puzzles, and post-game differ. See G/S vs HGSS.
