Fast answer

Yellow teams, not generic RBY

Several leaders differ from Red and Blue—most famously Lt. Surge’s solo Raichu and remixed later gyms. Use this page as the party reference, then open the linked beat guides for counters, puzzles, and checklists. Recommended levels are planning ranges from the gym dataset, not forced caps.

Recommended level curve

Early spike: Brock

Partner Pikachu is Electric into Rock/Ground. Grab Mankey, Nidoran, or status-heavy bugs before Pewter—see the Brock guide.

Mid game: Surge & Erika

Thunder Badge permits Fly outside battle and triggers Squirtle gift timing; it does not raise an obedience threshold. Traded-Pokemon obedience rises at Cascade (Lv.30), Rainbow (Lv.50), Marsh (Lv.70), and Earth (all levels).

Late game: Koga spike

Fuchsia jumps to the mid-40s/50. Do not walk in at Erika levels. Sabrina and Blaine sit in a similar band before Giovanni.

FAQ

Gym team questions

What is Lt. Surge’s team in Pokemon Yellow?

Only Raichu Lv.28 with Thunderbolt, Mega Punch, Mega Kick, and Growl. Ground moves (Dig/Earthquake) shut the fight down once you have them.

Do Yellow gym teams match Red and Blue?

Not always. Yellow remixed several leaders (Surge is the clearest example). Always use Yellow-specific data when planning.

What badge does each gym give?

Boulder, Cascade, Thunder, Rainbow, Soul, Marsh, Volcano, Earth—in that trainer-card order. Badge boosts and obedience rules are listed on each card and in the Gym tool.

Where do I practice type matchups?

Use the Gen 1 type chart and damage calculator, then load candidates in the Team Planner.

What comes after all eight badges?

Victory Road and the Elite Four. Import a save on Save Import to sync badges into My Run.
