Pokemon Yellow hardcore Nuzlocke

Standard Nuzlocke is not enough. This page locks the hardcore package for Yellow: level caps on each gym’s highest mon, no items in battle, and Set mode. The wipe magnets are Brock under cap 12 and the Erika 32 → Koga 50 spike with Toxic spam and zero mid-fight potions.

Fast Answer

Caps + empty bag mid-fight + no free switches

Play Yellow Nuzlocke, then add: never overlevel the next boss’s highest level, never open the bag for heals/X items during battle, and play on Set. Caps: 12 / 21 / 28 / 32 / 50 / 50 / 54 / 55, then League 56 → 65. If you only remember one Yellow fact: Koga is level 50 with three Venonat and a Venomoth—train after Erika before you touch Fuchsia.

Next: Brock · cap 12

Train to 12, not past. Electric does nothing—need Mankey / Nidoran / Butterfree-style answers under the cap.

Mark bosses cleared. The tracker highlights the next cap. Caps = highest level on that Yellow fight.

  • Koga guide · Psychic preferred.
Sabrina

Sabrina · cap 50

ExtremeSet mode

No-item play patterns

  • Overlevel to the cap, never past it.

  • Sacrifice fodder intentionally under Set when a clean switch is illegal.
  • Heal to full between every trainer—no “one more fight.”

    Hardcore Yellow tips

    Cap math is boss-based

Use the leader’s highest mon, not “recommended average.” Yellow Koga is 50 because Venomoth is 50—not because of a generic chart.

    Gifts are power spikes

If gifts are legal, Charmander / Squirtle / Lapras rewrite entire gyms. If banned, plan grass and water encounters early.

    Randomizer note

These caps and teams are vanilla Yellow. Randomizer HC still uses the same rule package; rebuild encounter tables from your seed log.

    FAQ

    Hardcore Nuzlocke questions

What makes a Nuzlocke “hardcore” in Pokemon Yellow?

Level caps, no items in battle, and Set mode on top of first-encounter / nickname / permadeath rules. Yellow-specific caps and gym teams matter more than Red/Blue spreadsheets.

Why is Koga the hardcore wall?

You leave Erika at cap 32, then face a level 50 Toxic team. Without mid-battle healing, underleveled teams melt. Train to 50 first.

    Can I heal between trainers?

Yes under classic hardcore—bag is banned only during battle. Abuse Poké Centers and full heals in the overworld.

Do I use the same encounter rules as a normal Nuzlocke?

Yes. This page assumes the same first-encounter rules; use the standard Nuzlocke tool for route tables.

What is the Champion level cap?

65 for Rival’s highest mon in the Champions Room path data used on this site. Cap per fight through the E4 rather than jumping straight to 65 after Giovanni.
