Restriction Run Toolkit
Pokemon Yellow Only Pikachu challenge
Clear Kanto with partner Pikachu as your only battler. Yellow is built for this fantasy—and also hard-walls you with Ground gyms, frail bulk (35 HP / 30 Def), and almost no field HMs on Pikachu. Pick a ruleset, track gyms, and open the deep links when a boss needs a full guide.
Fast Answer
Possible—Ground is the real boss
A solo partner clear is a real challenge run, not a softlock, if you use Quick Attack and grinding for Brock, then collect non-Electric TMs later for Giovanni and other Ground walls. Thunderbolt (Lv.26) carries Water and Flying stretches. Frailty means items, speed control, and overleveling are normal tools.
Rulesets
Pick how strict you are
Only partner Pikachu may battle. Non-battling HM slaves are allowed for Cut, Surf, Strength, and Fly. Items and overleveling allowed. Best first attempt.
Shared core rules
- Partner Pikachu is the only mon that may deal battle damage / take KOs
- No evolving the partner with workarounds for “Raichu only” variants unless you rename the run
- White-out = failed attempt (or continue with honor rules you stated up front)
- Dupes / glitch mons / Master Ball optional ban list—state it in your title
Why soft HM slaves exist
- Pikachu’s Yellow HM list is basically Flash among field tools
- Cut, Surf, and Victory Road Strength are story gates that need helpers; Fly is optional convenience and cannot softlock the run
- Slaves must stay in the box or never fight if you claim “only Pikachu battles”
- See HM slaves for Farfetch’d + Lapras packages

Solo Pikachu vs each leader
Brock · Pewter
Geodude 10 + Onix 12 are Rock/Ground. Electric does nothing. No coverage TM is available before Brock in normal progression, so use Quick Attack, grind, heal, and respect Bind/Bide.
- Primary: Quick Attack from Lv.11 plus levels and Potions
- Deep guide: Beat Brock
Misty · Cerulean
Water weak to Electric. Starmie is fast—Thunder Wave, healing items, and bolt (or Thundershock spam pre-26).
Lt. Surge · Vermilion
Raichu 28 resists Electric and hits hard. Chip with Body Slam / Seismic Toss / Mega Punch; do not pure bolt mirror.
Erika · Celadon
Grass resists Electric. Overlevel, Toxic/stall tools if allowed, or strong Normal TMs. Mega Drain will punish frailty.
Koga · Fuchsia
Toxic + high levels. Antidotes, speed, and not lingering in status wars. Psychic on Venomoth still hurts.
Sabrina · Saffron
Alakazam line outspeeds and out-specials. Massive overlevel, X items, or Wave + luck. Expect resets.
Blaine · Cinnabar
Neutral Fire. Manage Confuse Ray and Fire Blast. Surf slave gets you here—Pikachu still fights alone.
Giovanni · Viridian
Dugtrio / Nidos / Rhydon Ground core. Electric is useless on most of the team. Fixed damage + Fighting TMs required.
Elite Four target band roughly Lv. 53–62 for normal teams—solo Pikachu often wants the high end or more. Full rosters: Elite Four guide.
Loadout
Moves, TMs, and field tools
TM priorities for solo Electric
- Seismic Toss — levels = damage; ignores Ground immunity for fixed HP
- Submission / Mega Punch / Mega Kick — post-Brock physical coverage for later Ground walls
- Body Slam / Double-Edge — general Normal power
- Thunderbolt / Thunder — water routes and Flyers
- Toxic / Rest — stall tools if your rules allow
Yellow partner also learns Quick Attack, Slam, Agility, Light Screen by level—see viability page.
HM reality check
- Pikachu can learn Flash (field + battle utility)
- Cannot learn Cut, Fly, Surf, or Strength in Yellow’s TM/HM list
- Soft runs: Farfetch’d (Cut/Fly) + Lapras/Gyarados (Surf/Strength)
- Strict runs: research sequence breaks or accept heavy glitch use—not required for a fun first clear

Play tips
Survive paper bulk
Overlevel without guilt
Restriction runs earn grind. Daycare is optional flavor; route grinding before Sabrina is normal.
Bag space is fine
Deposit slaves after HMs. As long as they never battle, soft rules still count as Only Pikachu.
Happiness still matters
If your rules allow accepting Bulbasaur then boxing it, happiness still gates the gift—or skip gifts entirely for purity.
Backup before Giovanni
Fissure and Earthquake end attempts instantly. Battery + savestate before Viridian Gym.
FAQ
Only Pikachu questions
Can you beat Yellow with only Pikachu?
Yes. Pack non-Electric TMs for Ground/Rock, Thunderbolt for Water/Flying, and usually HM slaves that never fight.
How do you beat Brock with only Pikachu?
Never Thunder Shock. Reach Lv.11 for Quick Attack, grind high enough to survive, bring Potions, and play around Onix’s Bind/Bide; the coverage TMs come later.
Do I need HM slaves?
For a sane map clear, yes. Pikachu does not learn Cut/Surf/Strength/Fly. Soft rules allow non-battling mules.
Is this easier than a Nuzlocke?
Different pain: one mon always battles, but you may heal freely. Combine both only if you enjoy suffering.
Does partner Pikachu evolve?
Not with Thunder Stone on a normal cart. Keep it Pikachu for the whole challenge—see the evolution guide.
