If you only need free mons: take a starter in Elm’s Lab, claim Bill’s Eevee in Goldenrod, finish the Mystery Egg Key Item errand and later hatch the separate Togepi Egg, beat Kiyo for Tyrogue, and raise Mania’s Shuckle to happiness 150+ to keep it. Coin prizes need the Coin Case; trades and statics round out the special-source set.

Mystery Egg errand → Togepi Egg
Take the Mystery Egg Key Item from Mr. Pokémon to Elm; it never hatches. After the Zephyr Badge, Elm’s aide in Violet Center gives you a separate Pokémon Egg that hatches into Togepi. Egg walkthrough.
Kenya mail Spearow
Randy in the Route 35 Goldenrod Gate gives Kenya with mail; deliver it to the sleepy man on Route 31. One-time delivery gift.
Shuckie · Cianwood
Mania loans Lv.15 Shuckle holding a Berry. Return later: happiness ≥150 keeps it. Use walking, gentle battles, and Goldenrod haircuts—see friendship checker.
Tyrogue · Mt. Mortar
Kiyo waits in B1F once you have Surf and Waterfall. Defeat him for Lv.10 Tyrogue (Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan/Hitmontop later by stats). No wild Tyrogue on cart.

Story-order special sources
1 · Opening Johto
Starter → Mystery Egg Key Item errand → separate Togepi Egg → early NPC trades (Onix, later Machop) → Sudowoodo once you have the SquirtBottle. Optional: Kenya delivery around Goldenrod access.
2 · Mid Johto
Bill’s Eevee after Ecruteak, Goldenrod Game Corner once you hold the Coin Case, Lake of Rage Red Gyarados, Cianwood Shuckle, Friday Lapras after Surf, Tyrogue after Waterfall.
3 · Legendaries & Kanto
Home legendary (Lv.40 mascot path), then post-Rocket wing for the other bird (Lv.70). After the S.S. Aqua: Celadon prizes, Snorlax, Pewter Rapidash, Route 14 Aerodactyl.

What free gift Pokémon can I get in Gold and Silver?
Starter, Bill’s Eevee, the separate Togepi Egg earned after the Mystery Egg Key Item errand, Kenya Spearow, Mania’s Shuckle loan (keepable), and Kiyo’s Tyrogue. Prizes and trades cost coins or a mon exchange.
Where is Tyrogue?
Mt. Mortar B1F from Karate King Kiyo after Surf and Waterfall. No wild encounters on original GBC carts.
How do I keep Shuckle?
Raise the loaned Shuckie’s happiness to 150+ before returning it. Mania then lets you keep it permanently.
Gold vs Silver prize differences?
Only the mid-tier Goldenrod mon: Ekans (Gold) vs Sandshrew (Silver). Everything else on both Game Corners matches by species list, with legendary levels swapped for Lugia/Ho-Oh.
Is this HeartGold / SoulSilver?
No—original Game Boy Color Gold and Silver only. Remake gifts, Pokéwalker, and HGSS schedules are out of scope.
