Fast answer

What counts as “rare” here?

Anything that needs a special method, a clock, a phone call, a one-time gift, a very low grass/fish rate, a version-exclusive map, or a transfer/event. Start with Friday Lapras, Heracross Headbutt, Route 34/35 Ditto, roamers after Burned Tower, then late-game Mt. Silver Larvitar. Mewtwo and the Gen 1 birds are not wild in G/S—use the Time Capsule guide.

Rates are “up to” per encounter check from pret/pokegold tables joined to the site map dataset. Soft resets and RNG still apply. Crystal and HGSS can differ—stay on this page for original GBC Gold/Silver.

Phone swarm outbreaks

One swarm at a time until daily flags reset. Register the caller, answer the phone, then hunt the listed map. Full rematch directory lives in the Mechanics Lab.

Transfer, event, and glitch caveats

Mewtwo & legendary birds

Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo have no wild G/S maps. Catch them in Red/Blue/Yellow, then move them with the Time Capsule after you unlock trading rules.

Mew & Celebi

Mythicals are event or special-case. Celebi is not a normal route hunt—see the Celebi / Coin Case page for risks and legitimate paths.

Gen 1 starters

Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle lines are not wild Johto gifts. Plan a Gen 1 cart + Time Capsule if you need them for the National Dex.

FAQ

Common rare-hunt questions

Where is Ditto for breeding?

Route 34 and Route 35 grass at a low per-check rate. Pair with the breeding / shiny DV guide and Route 34 Day Care.

Where is Larvitar?

Mt. Silver cave floors after you unlock the mountain (16 badges + Oak path). Rates are tiny—bring many balls and expect a long hunt.

How do phone swarms work?

Certain trainers call when registered in the Pokégear and set a daily swarm flag that replaces encounter tables (for example Yanma on Route 35, Qwilfish on Route 32). Only one swarm is active at a time. Use the swarm cards above or the Mechanics Lab.

Gold vs Silver exclusives?

Filter this page by “Version exclusive,” or open the Gold vs Silver vs Crystal table and the Trade Planner.

Is Mewtwo in the Power Plant?

No in original Gold/Silver. Power Plant is for the Machine Part / Zap Cannon story. Mewtwo must come through Time Capsule from Gen 1.

Is this HeartGold / SoulSilver?

No. Encounter rates, gifts, and some story items differ in the remakes. This tool is pret/pokegold GBC Gold & Silver only.

Field tips

Method first

Confirm whether the target is wild, static, gift, prize, swarm, or transfer before grinding a route. Wrong method wastes hours.

RTC & phone

Friday Lapras, day/night exclusives, fruit trees, and swarms all depend on the real-time clock and daily flags. Keep emulator RTC enabled.

Dex completion

Mark catches in the catch checklist, trade exclusives in the Trade Planner, and finish transfer gaps with the Time Capsule guide.
