After the Slowpoke Well Rocket fight, complete the Farfetch’d chase in Ilex Forest. Speak to the Headbutt man in Ilex Forest for a free TM02. Extra copies sell at Goldenrod Dept. Store 5F for ¥2000 once Headbutt is unlocked.

Why isn’t Heracross appearing from Headbutt trees?

You need a rare tree (coordinate score equals Trainer ID mod 10) on a Canyon map. Bad and good trees only use the common table (Spearow and Aipom). Azalea Town uses the Forest set, so rare trees there give Pineco, not Heracross. City trees and Rock Smash rocks are not Headbutt tables.

Can I catch Heracross before Whitney?

Yes. Get TM02 in Ilex Forest after Azalea, then Headbutt rare trees on Route 33 (or backtrack Canyon routes 29–32). A Lv.10 Heracross has high Attack but no Fighting move: Reversal comes at Lv.44, while Rock Smash is obtained only after Whitney and Sudowoodo. Use neutral Horn Attack/Tackle damage rather than treating it as a Fighting-type counter.

Is this the same as Pokemon Crystal Headbutt trees?

No. This page is for original Game Boy Color Gold and Silver only. Crystal changes some map tree sets and story timing; do not use Crystal Heracross maps for a Gold/Silver cart.

Common Headbutt questions

Do city trees work?

No. Maps tagged City or None never start a Headbutt battle in Gold/Silver even if trees are drawn. Stick to Canyon and Forest maps listed above.

Is Azalea Town good for Heracross?

Not in original Gold/Silver. Azalea uses the Forest set (Pineco on rare trees). Use Route 33 instead — it is Canyon and sits next door.

Does time of day matter?

Headbutt species tables do not split by morning/day/night. Some Headbutt encounters can start asleep depending on the engine’s sleep rules, but the species rolls above stay the same. Grass day/night tables are a different system — see the time-of-day exclusives guide.

How is this different from Rock Smash?

Rock Smash (TM08) uses rock smashable tiles and a separate Krabby/Shuckle table. It is not Headbutt and will never produce Heracross.

Can I use this for a Nuzlocke?

Yes. Decide before Route 29 whether Headbutt areas count, then toggle Headbutt in the Nuzlocke encounter tracker.
