Headbutt trees & Heracross finder
In original Pokemon Gold and Silver, Heracross is a Headbutt-only encounter. It sits on the rare Canyon table (Routes 29–33 and 42–46), not in grass and not in Azalea Town forest trees. Use the rare-tree calculator, filter every active map, compare Gold vs Silver Forest bugs, then jump into the live Mechanics Lab, map, Pokédex, and Whitney counters.
Fast answer
Where is Heracross in Gold & Silver?
Get TM02 Headbutt from the man in Ilex Forest after the Farfetch’d chase. Then Headbutt rare trees on Canyon maps only: Routes 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, and 46. Earliest practical hunt is Route 33 right outside Azalea. A rare tree uses the rare table (Heracross 30% at Lv.10). Good/bad trees only roll Spearow and Aipom. Azalea Town is Forest set — rare trees there give Pineco, never Heracross. Gold and Silver share the Canyon table; only Forest bug lines differ (Caterpie line vs Weedle line).

Rare / good / bad tree calculator
Same rules as the live Mechanics Headbutt panel: tree score from tile coordinates, Trainer ID last digit, then modular difference. Rare trees are the only ones that can roll Heracross on Canyon maps.
Rare tree
Encounter table if a mon appears
Rare
Difference 0 (scores equal). 80% chance a mon falls out. Uses the rare table — Heracross lives here on Canyon maps.
Good
Forward modular difference 1–4. 50% encounter chance. Uses the common table only.
Bad
Difference 5–9. Only 10% encounter chance. Still common table — keep walking to another tree.

Percentages below are slot chances after a mon actually falls from the tree. Encounter rate (10% / 50% / 80%) is separate and depends on tree quality.
| Species | Set / quality | Gold | Silver | Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heracross | Canyon · rare | 30% | 30% | 10 | High Attack · neutral Whitney damage at this stage · team staple |
| Aipom | Canyon · both | 20% common / 20% rare | Same | 10 | Normal · exclusive-feeling early catch |
| Spearow | Canyon · both | 80% common / 50% rare | Same | 10 | Filler slots on Canyon trees |
| Pineco | Forest · rare | 30% | 30% | 10 | Bug · Forretress line · not Heracross |
| Exeggcute | Forest · both | 15% each table | Same | 10 | Grass/Psychic seed |
| Bug line | Forest · both | Caterpie / Metapod / Butterfree | Weedle / Kakuna / Beedrill | 10 | Only Forest table differs by version |

How to get TM02 Headbutt
Story gift · Ilex Forest
- Clear Team Rocket from Slowpoke Well.
- Enter Ilex Forest from Azalea and finish the Charcoal Kiln Farfetch’d chase.
- Talk to the Headbutt man in the forest for TM02 Headbutt.
- Teach it to any compatible mon (many Normal/Fighting/Bug learners).
Shop reprints · Goldenrod 5F
Goldenrod Dept. Store 5F sells extra TM02 copies once you own Headbutt. Useful if you spent the gift disk on a mon you later box. Rock Smash (TM08) is a separate field move from Route 36 — do not confuse its rocks with Headbutt trees.
Priority target
Heracross
Heracross has base 125 Attack and can contribute strong neutral damage after leveling, but it has no Fighting move before Whitney. Reversal is Lv.44, and Rock Smash is collected only after Whitney and the Sudowoodo event. See the Whitney guide and best team presets.
Forest rare
Pineco
30% on rare Forest trees (Azalea, Ilex, Routes 34–39…). Evolves to Forretress with levels — not a Heracross substitute for Fighting coverage.
Canyon both
Aipom
Shows on common and rare Canyon tables. Fun Normal type for nuzlockes; mark it in the Nuzlocke tracker if Headbutt counts.

FAQ
Common Headbutt questions
Do city trees work?
No. Maps tagged City or None never start a Headbutt battle in Gold/Silver even if trees are drawn. Stick to Canyon and Forest maps listed above.
Is Azalea Town good for Heracross?
Not in original Gold/Silver. Azalea uses the Forest set (Pineco on rare trees). Use Route 33 instead — it is Canyon and sits next door.
Does time of day matter?
Headbutt species tables do not split by morning/day/night. Some Headbutt encounters can start asleep depending on the engine’s sleep rules, but the species rolls above stay the same. Grass day/night tables are a different system — see the time-of-day exclusives guide.
How is this different from Rock Smash?
Rock Smash (TM08) uses rock smashable tiles and a separate Krabby/Shuckle table. It is not Headbutt and will never produce Heracross.
Can I use this for a Nuzlocke?
Yes. Decide before Route 29 whether Headbutt areas count, then toggle Headbutt in the Nuzlocke encounter tracker.
Where do I check live formula tools?
The sitewide Mechanics Lab Headbutt tab uses the same score formulas and full encounter slot lists if you want a second UI.
