How to play Pokémon Gold & Silver today
Pick an ownership and hardware path for original Game Boy Color Gold and Silver—not HeartGold/SoulSilver—then verify saves and the real-time clock before a long Johto run. Personal-copy rules vary by jurisdiction, so this page provides practical options rather than legal advice.
Fast answer
Ownership first, convenience second
If you already own the 3DS Virtual Console release, keep that path. If you own a healthy cartridge, test save + clock, then play on GBC-family hardware or a modern cart reader. Where local law permits a personal cart dump, use a reputable emulator with RTC. Do not buy Switch Online just for Gold/Silver until Nintendo lists those exact titles.

Ownership assumptions & local law
- Authentic cartridge play on compatible hardware
- Previously purchased 3DS Virtual Console software
- Personal dump of a cart you own only where applicable law permits it
- Not ROM download sites, preloaded flash carts sold as “full,” or cracked dumps
Gold vs Silver decision
Same story engine on both carts. Version identity is mostly exclusives and mascot legendaries (Ho-Oh focus on Gold, Lugia focus on Silver). Use the comparison tools before you buy a second cart for trading.

Clock & cart facts
Why RTC matters on Gold & Silver
Original carts use a real-time clock: morning from 04:00, day from 10:00, night from 18:00, with ¥3000 starting money. Day, hour, minute, and weekday drive wild tables, evolutions, weekly events, and phone timing.
Day / night encounters
Grass maps pick separate morning, day, and night slots. Water tables do not split by time.
Friendship evolutions
At friendship 220+, Eevee becomes Espeon in morning/day or Umbreon at night when it levels up.
Weekday events
Bug Contest, haircuts, and other scheduled events read the RTC weekday. Swarm calls are different: their trainer phone scripts can trigger randomly at ANYTIME and are not assigned to a weekday.
Phone directory
28 registerable contacts with capacity 10 on original Gold and Silver.
Version exclusives
The dataset lists 10 Gold-only and 10 Silver-only species entries, but those totals include evolution-only forms; they are not 20 separate wild encounter slots.
Link & Time Capsule
Same-gen trades and Gen I Time Capsule rules still need compatible link hardware or VC-family wireless.
Saved checklist
Before the first serious save
Cartridge watch list
- Counterfeit boards with bad saves or no real RTC
- Used carts that boot but wipe after power-off
- Clock stuck on one weekday forever
- Link cable pins / wireless only within the same release family
Emulator watch list
- Enable RTC; do not “speed through days” only with save states
- Keep at least one ordinary in-game battery save
- Separate software from how you obtained the game data
- Use the site password tool if you must retarget the clock

FAQ
Common “how do I play” questions
Can I play Pokemon Gold / Silver on PC?
You can use hardware adapters that run a real cartridge. A personal cart dump with an RTC-capable emulator may also be an option where applicable law permits it; ownership alone does not guarantee identical legality in every jurisdiction. This page does not help source ROMs.
Can I play on a phone?
Same ownership rules as desktop. Prefer emulators that expose a working RTC and ordinary save files. Test day/night before investing hours.
Is Virtual Console still usable?
New purchases are closed. Existing owners may redownload while Nintendo keeps the service. VC is often the cleanest official software path when you already own it.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include Gold and Silver?
Do not assume yes. Verify the exact game name in Nintendo’s catalog. Other Pokémon classics do not count as proof.
Why do people say emulators “break” Gen 2?
Usually missing or frozen RTC. Without a moving clock you lose correct wild tables, Espeon/Umbreon timing, weekly events, and many phone features. Enable RTC and keep battery saves.
Should I play original G/S or HeartGold / SoulSilver?
Different products. Original GBC is shorter, stricter, and has the classic phone/apricorn systems. HGSS are full remakes with different post-game and quality-of-life. Use the original vs remake tool.
Is Crystal better?
Crystal adds story focus on Suicune and some quality changes; Gold/Silver keep original mascot identity and exclusive lists. Compare on the three-way guide.

Play tips
Keep Gen 2 features alive
Save often in-game
Save states are fine for convenience, but weekly events and trades expect a real battery save.
Plan one version first
Finish Johto on one cart, then trade exclusives. The version tool lists ten species entries each way, including some evolution-only forms rather than ten separate wild encounters.
Know what the clock controls
Friday Lapras, day/night encounters, and friendship evolution timing need a working clock. Raikou, Entei, and Suicune movement and encounter eligibility do not depend on RTC time or weekday.
HGSS is not a substitute page
Remake maps, levels, and items differ. This hub’s walkthroughs and tools target original GBC data.
