How to catch Moltres in Pokemon Yellow

Moltres is a one-time Lv.50 static on Victory Road 2F (Fire / Flying, catch rate 3). Earn all eight badges, push Strength boulder switches through the cave, save at the bird, then chip with sleep or freeze and Ultra Balls. Not Mt. Ember—that is a remake location.

Fast answer

Badges · Strength · 2F bird

After all eight badges, pass Route 23 gates into Victory Road. Use Strength on the boulder switches (full floor order on the Victory Road guide). On 2F, find the Lv.50 Moltres bird static—save, then sleep/freeze + low HP + Ultra Balls (catch rate 3). Remake players looking for Mt. Ember will not find it there in Yellow.

Route to the bird

From badges to Victory Road 2F

1. Eight badges + Strength

Complete the gym circuit (including Viridian / Giovanni) and keep HM04 Strength on a party mon. Route 23 checks every badge before Victory Road.

2. Route 22 → 23 gates

Fight the late Rival on Route 22 if needed, then pass each badge gate on Route 23 toward the Victory Road entrance.

3. Boulder switches

Push Strength boulders onto switches on 1F → 2F → 3F, drop the far boulder back to 2F for the final barrier. Full sequence lives on the Victory Road guide—Moltres sits on 2F as a side static.

4. Save, then catch

Talk to / walk into the bird for the static battle. Save before contact. Use the catch tool below for Ultra Ball odds with sleep/freeze.

Gen 1 ball odds for Moltres

Uses the same Yellow catch model as the site Catch Planner (catch rate 3, ball factors, status bonuses). Default max HP 158 is a mid-DV Lv.50 estimate; an untrained static Moltres can have 150–165 HP.

Approx. catch chance

Matchup tips

  • Strong hits: Rock, Water, Electric (Rock Slide, Surf, Thunderbolt).
  • Watch Fire Spin: Gen 1 trapping can lock a mon and chip it while you try to throw balls.
  • Chip safely: Prefer sturdy Water/Rock with status support over glass cannons.
  • Paralysis: Helps speed control; sleep/freeze is better for the catch bonus.

Play tips

Fewer reloads on CR 3

Not Mt. Ember

FireRed / LeafGreen place Moltres on Mt. Ember. In Yellow it is only the Victory Road 2F static—follow Indigo Plateau, not Cinnabar’s mountain.

Save on 2F, not mid-switch

Finish the boulder path enough to reach the bird safely so a failed catch does not force a full Strength redo from 1F.

Fire Spin is the real hazard

Trapping plus residual damage can KO a chipper while you spam balls. Keep a second status mon or Master Ball backup.

Optional for the League

You can skip Moltres entirely and still challenge the Elite Four the same day you clear Victory Road.

What level is Moltres?
