How to catch Zapdos in Pokemon Yellow

Zapdos is a one-time Lv.50 static inside the Power Plant on Route 10 (Electric / Flying, catch rate 3). Surf in, ignore or clear fake Voltorb/Electrode balls, save at the bird sprite, then chip with sleep or freeze and Ultra Balls—or spend the Master Ball.

Fast answer

Surf · fake balls · bird static

With HM03 Surf and the Soul Badge, cross Route 10 water into the Power Plant. Treat most “item balls” as Voltorb (Lv.40) or Electrode (Lv.43) until proven real. Zapdos is the bird-shaped static at Lv.50—save, then sleep/freeze + low HP + Ultra Balls (catch rate 3). Full plant loot and layout: Power Plant guide.

Route to the bird

From Route 10 to Power Plant Zapdos

1. Unlock Surf

Clear the Safari Zone Secret House for HM03 Surf, then beat Koga for the Soul Badge so Surf works outside battle.

2. Surf Route 10 entrance

From the Cerulean / Rock Tunnel side of Route 10, Surf the water to the Power Plant door. Heal first—there is no Center inside.

3. Fake balls vs real loot

Six Voltorb and two Electrode look like Poké Balls. Real pickups (Thunder, Reflect, vitamins, Rare Candy) and Zapdos are separate—the bird is a bird sprite, not a ball.

4. Save, then catch

Walk into Zapdos for the static battle. Save before contact. Use the catch tool below for Ultra Ball odds with sleep/freeze.

Gen 1 ball odds for Zapdos

Uses the same Yellow catch model as the site Catch Planner (catch rate 3, ball factors, status bonuses). Default max HP 158 is a mid-DV Lv.50 estimate; an untrained static Zapdos can have 150–165 HP.

Low odds

Approx. catch chance

Pick Ultra Ball and sleep/freeze for the usual legendary plan.

Zapdos stands as a bird object inside the plant (not a ball). Fake balls are spread through the corridors—Ground coverage helps if you fight them.

Matchup tips

  • Strong hits: Rock and Ice (Rock Slide TM48, Ice Beam). Ground does not hit Flying.
  • Avoid: Electric into it is resisted; pure Ground spam misses.
  • Chip safely: Watch Drill Peck and Thundershock—bring a sturdy Rock or Ice chipper.
  • Paralysis: Helps speed control; sleep/freeze is better for the catch bonus.

Play tips

Fewer reloads on CR 3

Heal before Surfing in

No Pokémon Center in the plant. Stock Full Restores, Escape Rope, and balls in Cerulean or the Rock Tunnel side first.

Bird sprite, not a ball

If you are clicking every ball looking for Zapdos, stop—the legendary is the fixed bird object. Balls are mostly traps or normal loot.

Ground for the plant, Rock for the bird

Ground deletes Voltorb lines but cannot hit Zapdos. Keep a Rock or Ice chipper for the catch fight itself.

Story can skip the bird

TM25 Thunder and vitamins are the plant’s permanent loot. Zapdos is optional for the Champion path.
