Fast answer

Surf in · watch fake balls · bird optional

With HM03 Surf and the Soul Badge, cross Route 10 water into the Power Plant. Treat most “item balls” as Voltorb (Lv.40) or Electrode (Lv.43) until proven real. Zapdos is the bird-shaped static at Lv.50—save before you talk to it.

Trap warning

Not every ball is loot

Yellow places eight disguise Pokémon as Poké Ball sprites inside the plant. Only the remaining ball sprites (and hidden tiles) are real items. Zapdos uses a bird sprite, so it will not look like a ball.

Interactive tool

Power Plant route tracker

Mark each stage done. Map pins match the Yellow Power Plant layout.

Step 1

Surf gate

No Surf, no plant. Finish Safari for HM03 and Koga for the Soul Badge before planning Zapdos.

Ground coverage

Ground moves delete Electric wilds and help pressure Voltorb lines. Dig/Earthquake users earn their slot here.

TM25 Thunder

Plant pickup beats waiting for level-up Thunder on many Electric mons. Pair with the Thunderbolt guide for mid-game options.

Bird trio

After Zapdos, Articuno (Seafoam) and Moltres (Victory Road 2F) complete the set before Mewtwo post-game.

Power Plant static

Opens with Drill Peck + Thundershock. Rock and Ice coverage hit hard. Ground attacks do no damage because Zapdos’s Flying type grants immunity, overriding Electric’s Ground weakness.

Approx. Gen 1 catch chance

Default Max HP 158 uses HP DV 8 and zero Stat Exp. A fresh Lv.50 Zapdos with base HP 90 can legally range from 150–165 HP.

Tips

Clear faster

Heal in Cerulean

The plant has no Pokémon Center. Heal, deposit surplus, and bring Escape Rope before Surfing over.

Save before Zapdos

CR 3 means long ball sessions. Soft-reset friendly: one save outside the fight is enough for retries if you KO it.

Thunder vs Thunderbolt

TM25 Thunder is plant-exclusive power; TM24 Thunderbolt from Surge is the accuracy-friendlier mid-game Electric option.

Magneton hunts

Plant grass is a prime Magneton spot for Nuzlocke or team builders who skipped earlier Magnemite lines.
