Fast Answer

Mt. Moon first—never the department store

The first Moon Stone most players need is the visible ball on Mt. Moon 1F. Celadon Mart 4F sells Fire / Water / Thunder / Leaf Stones (₽2,100) but not Moon Stone. Two more visible balls sit on Route 2 (Cut) and Rocket Hideout B2F; two hidden stones hide on Mt. Moon B2F and Pokemon Mansion 1F.

Mt. Moon 1F · visible

EarliestBefore Cerulean

Visible Poké Ball on Mt. Moon 1F. Grab it on your first pass through the cave after Pewter. If you already have Nidorino (Lv. 16 from Nidoran♂), evolve immediately for Nidoking’s mid-game coverage.

  • Map target: MtMoon1F
  • Kind: visible overworld ball
  • Best use: first Nido evolution

Mt. Moon B2F · hidden

Same dungeon

Second stone inside Mt. Moon on B2F. It does not sparkle as a ball—use Itemfinder (Route 11 aide, 30 owned) later, or search the hidden-item tile while you are already fossil hunting.

  • Map target: MtMoonB2F
  • Also here: Helix / Dome fossil choice

Route 2 · visible (Cut)

VisibleHM01 required

Visible ball on the east side of Route 2 (between Viridian and Pewter). Trees block the strip until you have HM01 Cut from the S.S. Anne captain and the Cascade Badge outdoor Cut rule. Open the map pin for exact placement next to the HP Up ball on the same ledge path.

Pokemon Mansion 1F · hidden

Cinnabar late

Final spare Moon Stone on Pokemon Mansion 1F (Cinnabar). Bring Itemfinder while hunting the Secret Key on B1F. Useful if you saved stones for Clefable / Wigglytuff / Nidoqueen after the story Nidoking evolve.

Other evolution stones (Celadon Mart)

Moon Stone is the odd one out

Celadon Mart 4F repeatedly sells Fire, Water, Thunder, and Leaf stones for ₽2,100. Players searching “buy moon stone yellow” hit a dead end—the five field stones above are the only legal single-cart sources.

Quick stone → mon map

  • Fire: Vulpix, Growlithe, Eevee→Flareon
  • Water: Poliwhirl, Shellder, Staryu, Eevee→Vaporeon
  • Thunder: Eevee→Jolteon (partner Pikachu refuses)
  • Leaf: Gloom, Weepinbell, Exeggcute
  • Moon: Nido lines, Clefairy, Jigglypuff only

Play tips

Don’t waste your first stone

Nidoking first for most runs

The Mt. Moon 1F stone on Nidorino is the highest-impact early spend. Extra stones can wait for Clefable or a second Nido.

Level 16 before the stone

Moon Stone only works on Nidorino / Nidorina, not baby Nidoran. Train to 16 first.

Hidden stones need patience

Itemfinder from the Route 11 aide (30 species) makes B2F and Mansion trivial. Or open map markers and search the highlighted tiles.

Cut unlocks Route 2 freebies

Moon Stone + HP Up share the Cut strip. Sweep both when you return south after the Anne.
