How to beat Chuck in Pokémon Gold & Silver
Chuck is the ocean-route Fighting leader on original Game Boy Color Gold & Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver). Surf to Cianwood, push Strength boulders past four Blackbelts, then beat Primeape (Lv.27) and Poliwrath (Lv.30) for the Storm Badge, TM01 DynamicPunch, and HM02 Fly from his wife. This page links the live map, gym tool, walkthrough, type chart, team planner, and Cianwood path guide.
Fast answer
Fly coverage, then punish Poliwrath
Surf Routes 40–41 into Cianwood during the Olivine Lighthouse / Secretpotion loop. The gym needs outdoor Strength. Lead with Flying or Psychic (~Lv.28–31) so both of Chuck’s fighters take 2× damage; keep Electric for Poliwrath if your flyer is worn down.
Fight plan: Delete Primeape before Rage stacks. On Poliwrath, expect Hypnosis, then Mind Reader → DynamicPunch (forced hit + confusion) and STAB Surf. Stock Full Heals. After the win, talk to Chuck’s wife for HM02 Fly—return to Olivine free for Jasmine.
Getting there
Olivine sea route → Cianwood
1. Unlock outdoor Surf
2. Surf west
- Cross Route 40 → Route 41 (Whirl Islands ring the sea; you do not need Whirlpool yet).
- Land in Cianwood City; heal at the Poké Center.
- Pharmacy: free Secretpotion after the Amphy flag.
3. Gym prerequisites
- Outdoor Strength: Plain Badge (Whitney) + HM04 (Olivine Cafe).
- Recommended band Lv.28–31 from the gym data set.
- Full Heals / Awakenings for Hypnosis; Super Potions for Surf chips.
Gym floor
Boulders + Blackbelts
Specialty: Fighting. Chuck destroys a boulder in his intro cutscene—you still need Strength for the rest of the floor. Blackbelts are optional for the badge but sit on the efficient EXP route. Same gym on Gold and Silver.

Cianwood Gym fight
Chuck’s team
Fixed battle moves (not pure level-up sets). Recommended window: Lv.28–31. Battle AI item: Full Heal ×1. Battle reward $750. Same party on Gold and Silver.
Slot 1
Primeape · Lv.27
- Moves: Leer, Rage, Karate Chop, Fury Swipes
- Threat: Speed 95 + Attack 105; Rage grows if you chip and stall; Karate Chop crit rate is elevated in Gen 2
- Answer: Flying or Psychic 2× openers. One-shot or two-shot quickly—do not farm chip damage into Rage
Slot 2 · Ace
Poliwrath · Lv.30
- Moves: Hypnosis, Mind Reader, Surf, DynamicPunch
- Threat: Hypnosis can appear, but is not a scripted opening move; Mind Reader locks DynamicPunch (100 power, confuses on hit); Surf is super effective on Rock, Ground, and Fire
- Answer: Flying / Psychic still 2× Fighting; Electric 2× Water. Ghosts ignore Fighting but eat Surf and can sleep
Why the wipe happens
Threat kit
Rage snowball
Primeape’s Rage turns long turns into a KO race. Bring a real super-effective hit instead of status stalling the lead.
Hypnosis → setup
Poliwrath can choose 60%-accurate Hypnosis, but the AI does not force it on turn one. If sleep lands, Mind Reader can set up a guaranteed DynamicPunch next; use sleep recovery promptly.
Mind Reader + DynamicPunch
DynamicPunch is only 50% accurate alone. After Mind Reader it cannot miss and still confuses. Switch or KO on the Mind Reader turn when you can.
Surf covers the “Fighting wall”
Rock is actually weak to Fighting, while Ground and Fire are neutral—not Fighting walls. All three are also weak to Poliwrath’s STAB Surf, so use Flying, Psychic, Electric, Grass, or a Ghost pivot instead.
Coverage paths
Flying · Psychic · Electric answers
Flying path
- Pidgeotto (Route 37 grass by now) with Gust / Wing Attack / Fly coverage is the default in-game answer.
- Hoothoot → Noctowl from night routes / National Park adds bulk if you leveled the line early.
- Golbat from caves (and later friendship Crobat) is a strong Poison/Flying option.
- Natu at the Ruins of Alph is Psychic/Flying—covers both of Chuck’s mon.
- Watch Hitmonchan’s elemental punches on the gym floor before the leader.
Psychic path
- Abra on Route 34 (or Goldenrod Game Corner) → Kadabra deletes Fighting with Psychic once it survives a turn.
- Espeon if you already friendship-evolved Eevee by day—see the Eevee guide.
- Natu (Ruins of Alph) is available before the ocean trip and hits both Fighting mon.
- Girafarig is mainly Route 43 (after Mahogany)—a post-Chuck catch, not a prep target.
Electric path
- Magnemite on Route 38 (on the way to Olivine) Thunder Waves and chips; evolve toward Magneton later.
- Mareep / Flaaffy from Route 32 is the clean in-game Electric line by this window.
- Jolteon if you already have a Thunderstone—pair with a Flying mon for Primeape.
- Electric alone is only neutral on Primeape—do not mono-Electric the whole gym.
Ghost note
- Haunter / Gengar walls pure Fighting but still takes Surf and can be put to sleep.
- Use Ghosts to blank Primeape’s Karate Chop, then switch to Electric/Flying for Poliwrath.
- Trade evolution for Gengar is optional—Haunter is enough support.
Suggested order
Coastal loop with Fly
- Clear Morty, unlock Surf, and travel to Olivine; flag Amphy on Lighthouse 6F.
- Surf Route 40–41 to Cianwood; heal; take the Secretpotion from the Pharmacy.
- Confirm Strength is usable; restock Full Heals; enter Cianwood Gym.
- Push boulders, clear Blackbelts if desired, then Flying/Psychic Chuck’s two-mon team.
- Claim Storm Badge + TM01; talk to Chuck’s wife for HM02 Fly.
- Fly (or Surf) back to Olivine, cure Amphy, and beat Jasmine; continue toward Mahogany / Lake of Rage.

Tips
Common wipe causes
No Strength
You can enter the gym but will not reach Chuck cleanly. Grab HM04 in Olivine Cafe and earn Whitney’s Plain Badge first.
All-Water team into Poliwrath
Surf does not save you from another Surf user with DynamicPunch. Bring Flying, Psychic, Electric, or Grass pressure.
Sleeping on Hypnosis
Literally—Full Heal the moment Hypnosis lands. Mind Reader turns are free wins for Chuck if you stay asleep.
Skipping Chuck’s wife
The badge enables Fly; the HM is a separate NPC gift outside. Talk to her before you leave Cianwood.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is Chuck the same on Gold and Silver?
Yes. Primeape Lv.27 and Poliwrath Lv.30 with the same fixed moves, Storm Badge, TM01, and Fly gift. Only your version-exclusive team options change.
Do I need Chuck before Jasmine?
Not required for the Mineral Badge—only the Secretpotion is. Chuck → Fly is the quality-of-life route so you are not Surfing Routes 40–41 twice. Full Jasmine flow: Jasmine guide.
What level do traded Pokémon obey after Storm Badge?
Up to Lv.70. Earlier badges raise the cap step by step; Storm is the high Johto obedience threshold before the final Rising Badge band.
Is DynamicPunch worth teaching?
Power 100 with guaranteed confusion on hit, but 50% accuracy without Mind Reader. Strong on Fighting specialists you control; keep a reliable STAB alternative on generalists. Item page: TM01 DynamicPunch.
