How to beat Jasmine in Pokémon Gold & Silver

Jasmine is the mid-Johto Steel wall on original Game Boy Color Gold & Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver). The gym is empty until you cure Amphy with the Secretpotion from Cianwood. Then face Magnemite ×2 (Lv.30) and Steelix (Lv.35) for the Mineral Badge and TM23 Iron Tail. This page links the live map, gym tool, walkthrough, type chart, and team planner.

Fast answer

Cure Amphy, then burn or dig Steelix

Deliver the Secretpotion on Lighthouse 6F so Jasmine returns to the gym. The interior has no other trainers—walk straight to the leader.

Fight plan: Ground moves delete the Magnemite pair (Electric/Steel, 4× Ground); Fighting is also , while Water is neutral. For Steelix (Steel/Ground, Def 200), use Water, Fire, Fighting, or Ground at ~Lv.31–36. Electric is , but Water is because Gen 2 Steel does not resist it. Olivine Mart sells Hyper Potions and individual status cures, not Full Heal.

Secretpotion → Amphy → gym opens

3. Cure & challenge

  • Return to Lighthouse 6F; Jasmine takes the Secretpotion and leaves for the gym.
  • Heal at the Olivine Poké Center; the local Mart sells Hyper Potions and individual status cures, but not Full Heal.
  • Enter Olivine Gym—trainer-free floor, only Jasmine.
  • Win for Mineral Badge + TM23 Iron Tail (battle reward $875).
Empty gym. No Beauty or Gentleman gauntlet—if you are underprepared, the wipe is only Jasmine’s three Pokémon, not a long hallway.

Slots 1–2

Magnemite · Lv.30 ×2

Electric Steel
  • Moves: Thunderbolt, Supersonic, SonicBoom, Thunder Wave
  • Threat: Paralysis + confusion openers; SonicBoom fixed 20 damage; Thunderbolt punishes Water/Flying leads
  • Answer: Ground is 4× (Electric weak + Steel weak). Dig, Earthquake, Magnitude, or Bone Club end them before Wave sticks

Slot 3 · Ace

Steelix · Lv.35

Steel Ground
  • Moves: Screech, Sunny Day, Rock Throw, Iron Tail
  • Threat: Defense 200 bulk, Screech shreds your Defense, Iron Tail 100 power (75% acc), Rock Throw chips Flyers/Fires
  • Answer: Water / Fire / Fighting / Ground at 2×. Electric is immune; Surf is a legitimate super-effective answer

Why the wipe happens

Threat kit

Thunder Wave openers

Both Magnemite carry Thunder Wave. Paralysis turns Steelix’s Iron Tail race into a coin flip. Buy Parlyz Heals locally, or bring Full Heals obtained elsewhere.

Steelix bulk

Defense 200 with Steel/Ground typing shrugs neutral STAB. Bring real super-effective damage or you stall into Screech + Hyper Potion.

Water matchup

Water is on Steelix because its Ground weakness is not canceled by Steel in Gen 2. Magnemite takes Water neutrally. Ground remains the fastest Magnemite answer, then Surf can cleanly pressure the ace.

Sunny Day + Iron Tail

Sunny Day does not buff Iron Tail, but it boosts your Fire answers—if she sets sun, lean into Flamethrower / Fire Blast / Ember lines. Iron Tail can still crit through soft leads.

Gym Guide dialogue admits steel is “newly discovered.” Treat Magnemite as Electric walls and Steelix as a Ground-cored tank—not a pure Steel mon you can Surf down.

Coverage paths

Fire · Ground · Fighting answers

Quilava

Fire path

2× SteelixStarter / Magmar
  • Cyndaquil line (Quilava / Typhlosion) is the cleanest in-game Fire for Steelix.
  • Magmar in Burned Tower (both versions) carries Fire Punch / Flamethrower lines.
  • Growlithe is Gold-wild (Routes 36–37); Vulpix is Silver-wild—check version differences.
  • Sunny Day from Steelix can boost your Fire damage if you keep the mon healthy.
Geodude

Ground path

4× Magnemite2× Steelix
  • Geodude / Graveler from Dark Cave, Union Cave, Route 46—Dig or Magnitude for both phases.
  • Onix (Union Cave or Violet Kyle trade) and later Steelix of your own if you already traded with Metal Coat.
  • Wooper / Quagsire on Route 32: Ground hits Magnemite 4×, while either Water or Ground STAB hits Steelix 2×.
  • Sandshrew (Union Cave, Gold more common) is a solid Dig user.
Machoke

Fighting path

2× SteelixMt. Mortar
  • Machop / Machoke in Mt. Mortar (on the way toward Lake of Rage / Mahogany) smash Steelix with Low Kick / Cross Chop.
  • Female Muscle Machop from the Goldenrod Dept Store trade (if you still have her from Whitney prep) remains excellent.
  • Heracross from rare Headbutt trees is Bug/Fighting with huge Attack.
  • Fighting is on Magnemite through its Steel weakness, though Ground is still the 4× shortcut.
Croconaw

Water note

2× SteelixSurf HM mon
  • Totodile line, Gyarados, and Quagsire all hit Steelix for 2× with Water STAB.
  • Water is neutral on Magnemite, so Ground remains the cleaner opener before Surfing the ace.
  • Keep a separate Ground answer so Surf is not your only plan.

Suggested order

Mid-Johto coastal loop

  1. Clear Morty (Fog Badge) and unlock outdoor Surf via the Kimono Girls path if you have not already.
  2. Travel Routes 38–39 into Olivine; climb the Lighthouse and flag Amphy’s sickness.
  3. Surf Route 40–41 to Cianwood; grab Secretpotion; preferably beat Chuck and claim Fly.
  4. Return to Lighthouse 6F, deliver the medicine, heal, and enter Olivine Gym.
  5. Ground out Magnemites → Fire/Fighting/Ground Steelix → Mineral Badge + TM23.
  6. Continue toward Mahogany / Lake of Rage (Red Gyarados) and Pryce, or detour for team coverage first.

Tips

Common wipe causes

Skipping the lighthouse

Walking into an empty gym with no Jasmine means Amphy is still sick. Finish the Secretpotion loop first.

All-Water party

Surf is genuinely 2× on Steelix in Gen 2. The real all-Water risk is taking Thunderbolt or paralysis from the Magnemite pair before reaching the ace.

Electric spam

Thunderbolt does zero to Steelix. Save Electric for later (Pryce’s Water/Ice, surf routes)—not this gym.

Burning PP on Magnemites

Ground one-shots free the Fire mon to enter Steelix at full PP. Do not grind special moves into the 4× targets.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is Jasmine the same on Gold and Silver?

Yes. Magnemite Lv.30 ×2 and Steelix Lv.35 with the same fixed moves, badge, and TM23. Only your version-exclusive counters (Growlithe vs Vulpix) change.

Does dialogue saying “TM09” mean something else?

In-game text can mislabel the machine index. The item you receive is TM23 Iron Tail—match the item database and TM/HM tool, not the spoken number.

Do I need Chuck before Jasmine?

Not required. You only need the Secretpotion. Chuck → Fly is the usual quality-of-life route so you are not Surfing the ocean twice.

Can I catch Steelix before this fight?

Wild Steelix is not the early answer. Onix evolves by trade holding Metal Coat—see the trade evolution guide. Jasmine’s Steelix is a scripted gym battle.
