Trade Psychic core
Pokemon Yellow Alakazam team
Build a story six around Abra → Kadabra → Alakazam. Alakazam needs a trade; without one, Kadabra keeps the same level-up path and TMs with slightly lower stats. Use the builder for trade vs no-trade cores, gym roles, and TM timing.
Fast Answer
Trade Kadabra for Alakazam · or keep Kadabra
Catch Abra in grass on Routes 5–8 (earliest reliable after Misty: Route 5/6 at Lv.7). It only knows Teleport until level 16, then becomes Kadabra with Confusion. Alakazam appears only via trade evolution of Kadabra—same learnset, higher Speed (120) and Special (135). Pair the Psychic with Ground coverage, a Water mon, and a physical answer for Sabrina’s mirror Psychics.

Abra · #063
HP 25 · Atk 20 · Def 15 · Spe 90 · Spc 105
Only Teleport. Catch rate 200—still flees often. Grind EXP carefully or babysit with stronger leads.
Grass · Routes 5–8
Kadabra · #064

Level 16 from Abra. Learns Confusion immediately. Wild Kadabra also appears on Route 8 (rare).

Alakazam · #065
HP 55 · Atk 50 · Def 45 · Spe 120 · Spc 135
Trade Kadabra. Same level-up moves; better speed tier and Special for late gyms and Elite Four.

Moves & TMs
Kadabra / Alakazam learnset and sets
Level-up (Kadabra & Alakazam)
- 16 Confusion
- 20 Disable
- 27 Psybeam
- 31 Recover
- 38 Psychic (level-up)
- 42 Reflect
Abra has no level-up moves beyond Teleport. Evolution at 16 is the real “unlock.”
Recommended story set
- Psychic — TM29 from Mr. Psychic (Saffron) or Lv.38
- Recover — Lv.31
- Thunder Wave — TM45 Route 24 pickup
- Reflect or Seismic Toss — Power Plant / Celadon Reflect; Route 25 Seismic Toss
Psychic is Special; Thunder Wave freezes faster foes. Seismic Toss ignores Defense for bulky Normals.
Key TM sources
- TM29 Psychic — Mr. Psychic’s House, Saffron
- TM45 Thunder Wave — Route 24 overworld item
- TM19 Seismic Toss — Route 25 overworld item
- TM33 Reflect — Power Plant pickup or Celadon Mart 2F (¥1,000)
- TM01 Mega Punch — Mt. Moon B2F (optional physical)
Gen 1 Psychic notes
- Category is by type: Psychic moves use the Special stat.
- Super effective vs Fighting and Poison (huge vs Koga’s line).
- Ghost damaging moves deal 0× to Psychic (type-chart bug).
- Bug is still dangerous into you—do not mirror every matchup.
- Your own Kadabra traded out and back keeps your OT and always obeys; only an outsider Alakazam can disobey above badge caps.
Boss roles
Where the Psychic carries (and where it sits)
Brock · Pewter
Bench Psychic
Abra is not online yet for a normal route. Use Mankey / Nidoran Double Kick instead.
Misty · Cerulean
Optional
You can grab Route 5 Abra after Misty. Starmie is Water/Psychic—your own Psychic is not a hard answer. Prefer Grass or Electric partners.
Lt. Surge · Vermilion
Mid
Raichu is pure Electric. Kadabra can Thunder Wave and chip, but Ground partners (Diglett/Nido) are cleaner. Grass resists Electric in Yellow.
Erika · Celadon
Strong
Grass/Poison takes Psychic hard. Kadabra/Alakazam with Psybeam/Psychic melts Gloom and Weepinbell. Watch Razor Leaf and status.
Koga · Fuchsia
Carry
Venonat/Venomoth are Bug/Poison—Psychic is super effective on Poison. Still respect Toxic and Leech Life; Recover helps long stalls.
Sabrina · Saffron
Mirror risk
She runs Abra / Kadabra / Alakazam. Psychic resists Psychic—bring sturdy physical attackers such as Snorlax, Fearow, or Dugtrio rather than a pure special war. Hitmonlee is weak to Psychic and is not a safe answer.
Blaine · Cinnabar
Support
Fire is neutral. Thunder Wave + Recover can control, but Water/Ground partners finish faster through Confuse Ray turns.
Giovanni · Viridian
Situational
Nido line and Rhydon invite Ice/Water from partners. Psychic hits Nidoqueen/Nidoking’s Poison half for super effective damage; Rhydon is Rock/Ground—use Water or Grass instead.
Partners
Best friends for an Alakazam core
Nidoking
Physical + coverageRoute 22 Nidoran♂ answers Brock before Abra exists, then TM Earthquake/Thunderbolt/Blizzard for holes Psychic cannot cover. Nidoking guide.
Gyarados
Surf + Fly pathMagikarp → Lv.20 Gyarados. Water/Flying handles Rocks and Fires; high Attack for Hyper Beam late. Complements Special-focused Alakazam.
Lapras
Silph giftFree Water/Ice on Silph Co. 7F. Ice Beam path walls Dragons and Ground. Lapras gift.
Arcanine
Fire slotGrowlithe + Fire Stone. Burns Grass and Bug that pressure Psychic. Faster late-game Fire option than Charmeleon mid-route.
Partner Pikachu
Yellow exclusiveAlways available; cannot Thunder Stone evolve. Keep for happiness gifts and Electric chip, or box once Jolteon/Raichu alternatives exist. Viability notes.
Hypno (no-trade Psychic alt)
No tradeDrowzee on Route 11 → Hypno at 26. Bulkier than Kadabra, lower ceiling. Use if Abra RNG fails and you refuse trades entirely.
Trade & obedience
Link trade is not an in-game NPC trade
How Alakazam actually evolves
Kadabra’s evolution method is EVOLVE_TRADE in the disassembly. You must complete a player-to-player (or emulator link) trade. None of the seven in-game NPC trades produce Alakazam.
Obedience depends on Original Trainer
- Your own tradeback: Kadabra keeps your OT ID after evolving, so the returned Alakazam always obeys.
- Another trainer’s Alakazam: may disobey above Lv.10 without Cascade.
- Outsider caps: Cascade → 30 · Rainbow → 50 · Marsh → 70 · Earth → all levels.
Play tips
Make the Psychic core feel free
Catching Abra
Lead with a fast status user or high-level mon. Teleport ends the fight if Abra moves first—Quick Balls do not exist; just re-roll grass on Route 5/6.
Early EXP
Until Lv.16 Abra contributes almost nothing. Park it in the second slot for Exp. All once you own that item, or Day Care walk if rules allow.
Sabrina plan
Do not force Alakazam vs Alakazam. Switch to Snorlax, Fearow, Dugtrio, or another strong physical attacker. Avoid Hitmonlee here because Psychic is super effective against Fighting.
Elite Four
Psychic is only 1× into Lorelei’s Water/Ice team, whose high Special also makes that matchup poor—use Electric or Grass coverage. Bruno’s Fighting team is the real Psychic target; Agatha’s Poison half also takes Psychic. Lance wants Ice from Lapras.
FAQ
Alakazam team questions
How do you get Alakazam in Pokemon Yellow?
Catch Abra (Routes 5–8), evolve at level 16 into Kadabra, then trade Kadabra. Alakazam is not wild.
Is Kadabra good enough without trading?
Yes for a full story run. You lose some Speed and Special versus Alakazam but keep Recover, Psybeam, Psychic, and the same TMs.
When should I teach TM29 Psychic?
After Saffron is open (Fresh Water/Soda Pop/Lemonade for the guards). Mr. Psychic’s house gifts TM29 once. Level 38 also teaches Psychic if you prefer saving the TM.
Does Alakazam learn Dig?
Kadabra and Alakazam can learn Dig via TM; Abra cannot. Ground coverage still usually belongs on Nidoking or a dedicated Ground mon.
What six should I run with Alakazam?
A reliable trade preset is Alakazam, Nidoking, Gyarados, Lapras or Arcanine, Pidgeot/Charizard for Fly, and partner Pikachu or Jolteon. Use the builder above to swap flex slots.
